dyol: do your own letterpress

Letterpress is currently the trendy thing in the world of printing.

Letterpress invitations are all the rage, letterpress posters sell for decently-priced amounts on etsy, and yet, I wanted to see if I could do it myself (this is clearly the same part of my “i can do everything” personality that led me making to wedding cake 1 and wedding cake 2)

Courtesy of Pyramid Atlantic, and the every wonderful instruction from letterpress associate Julia Louie, my letterpressing dream has come true.

For two and a half hours I (and Lauren) learned how to set type, place in leading strips, turn on the Vandercook press, mix inks, ink the press, line up my type, line up my paper, and then roll my paper through the printer! It was amazing, I was on cloud nine. Before I finished I was already asking what I needed to do to become a pro. I think I’m well on my way.

If you are looking for an awesome creative outlet that may lead you to printing your own posters, invitations, save the dates, business cards, greeting cards, etc, then give letterpress a shot. Hopefully it makes you as happy as it made me.
